Most fans know Vladislav Tretiak from the historic 1972 Summit Series as a 20 year old Soviet goalie who surprised the hockey world with his play. It seems that he was a total unknown to Team Canada players and hockey fans in general. But this extremely rare photograph is from a game 3 years earlier in Maple Leaf Gardens vs the Canadian National team. Shortly after this game Canada pulled out of the World Championships and the National team was disbanded. Tretiak's goaltending prowess really should not have been so surprising to the Canadian shooters in September 1972 because the backup goalie for Canada was Ken Dryden sitting on the bench watching Tretiak's acrobatics. This incredible photo has Tretiak making an incredible save and eyeing the puck in mid-air. And, amazingly this image was personally signed by Tretiak himself!
